Chrome Plating & Nickel Plating – What’s the Difference?

For those who have worked in an industrial setting, or who are familiar with the day to day goings on associated with industrial settings, you’ll probably have come across various metal plating processes.

If a part or a product has a metal finish, there is a very strong chance that it will have undergone some form of plating or another. Two popular and relatively common plating processes used in a wide range of different settings, are: Chrome plating and Nickel plating.

But what exactly are the main differences between the two, how are they commonly used, and what are some of the main benefits that they can provide?

Nickel Plating

Historically speaking, nickel plating has been used most often for the finishing of metal products. Because of this, any fittings or fixtures in and around the home which have undergone nickel plating processes are considered to have a more traditional finish. Nickel plating is often a less expensive alternative to Chrome plating, so as you may expect, it is much more common. There are two different processes when it comes to Nickel plating: Electroless plating, and conventional electrolytic plating.

Conventional electrolytic plating provides a level or corrosion resistance and is functional, though with time, it can fade and tarnish. Electroless plating is actually a nickel-phosphorus coating which is glassy in appearance and is both very hard and extremely corrosion resistant. For these reasons, it is often used on a number of rough-service applications. Generally, nickel-plated products will have a gentle yellow hue, which will be brighter or weaker depending on the density of the nickel, and how much plating is present.

Chrome Plating

Chrome plating provides a reflective light blue shine to the metals it is used upon, and is arguably considered to be much more fashionable and modern due to the shininess of the finish. Chrome plating can come in a brushed metal finish, or more commonly in a shiny, velvety finish which gives a smooth and reflective surface.

Chrome plating provides excellent abrasion, wear, and corrosion resistance properties, plus it is able to yield fantastic hardiness values. What’s more, it also boasts a very low coefficient of friction. Chrome plating can also be combined with nickel plating, in which a layer of nickel is applied, followed by a thin flash of chrome, which helps to provide tarnish resistance and additional corrosion resistance. Many automotive parts and accessories with a chrome finish are created in this way. While chrome plating is more expensive, the finish it provides is very popular.
