Preventing Cell Culture Contamination in Labs with Copper Plated Equipment

Copper plating prevents cell culture contamination in labsWe were recently asked to carry out a copper plating job on behalf of the global supplier of laboratory products, New Brunswick. We successfully copper plated the inside of this incubator to prevent cell culture contamination. Laboratory incubators provide the optimum temperature and environment for cell cultures to grow. But the warm, humid environment has a tendency to encourage the growth of microorganisms that can cause contamination. The antimicrobial action of copper can prevent this cell culture contamination, which is why New Brunswick asked for our help!

Studies Into the Antimicrobial Action of Copper

Copper is classed as a natural antimicrobial material, and has been recognised as such in the past by even ancient civilisations. Its properties are under investigation by scientists all over the world, with intensive research and studies being undertaken to determine the molecular mechanisms responsible for its antibacterial actions.

The Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR) have recently carried out a study that explored the suppression of bacterial colonization by solid copper, proving that copper piping reduces the growth of Legionella pneumophila, causative agent of Legionaire’s Disease.

Copper has been proven to inhibit the growth of many different micro organisms, and is used as an effective antimicrobial agent in a variety of settings such as food production, processing plants, agriculture and hospitals. It can, in fact, slow or stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, algae and yeast. To put it very simply, copper ions are able to bond to contaminants and disrupt the key proteins and processes that are critical to microbial life.

Copper reduces microbes in a wide range of laboratory equipment, including medical and scientific devices such as incubators. Testing, studies and experience have shown that copper wire, copper sulphate or even a simple penny added to a water reservoir of carbon dioxide incubators can significantly inhibit microbial growth. And copper surfaces clearly reduce the number of contaminants present too.
