Are Our Planes Boeing Up in the World?

Electroless nickel plating meets BoeingFamous plane makers, Boeing, have found what seems to be the “lightest metal ever” named microlattice – a material which is 99.9% air!  A Californian development, this is a way for both planes and rockets to obtain weight reduction.  This 3D open cellular polymer structure will reduce fuel consumption a plane needs during take off, flying and landing.  Currently, Boeing are looking in to using this structure internally on their planes so are researching the use of this new structure in areas, such as the floor, overhead compartments and in other fixtures so that a modern internal environment can be created for passengers.

Electroless Nickel Plating meets Boeing

Boeings researchers have discovered that the 3D open cellular polymer structure must be coated with electroless nickel plating, so that the structure has necessary strength required, due to its web of nickel-phosphorus alloy lattice tubes being just 100 nanometres thick.  The theory behind using this new structure and coating it with electroless nickel plating is much more advanced in its theory for aerospace engineering, so has not been trialled yet for space-bound vehicles, including rockets.  It is, however, known that it would be used for exactly the same weight saving reasons to go to space as it would be used in planes, but also because of its ability to compress.  This means that objects sent in to space would expand post launch, thus reducing cargo hold space.  Before this is used in space-bound vehicles, more research and evidence will be needed, but the revelation of the said ‘lightest metal ever’ is nevertheless a very exciting forward move scientifically.
