About Electroless Nickel Plating

Nowadays, electroplating is a very common procedure used in a number of different industries, for a whole variety of different reasons. Basically, electroplating is a perfect opportunity to coat cheaper and more readily available metals, with more expensive and more versatile metals, so you essentially get the best of both worlds. 

The problem is, however, that with traditional electroplating you will often find that there will be a lot of post-coating issues that need to be dealt with, which may then require additional processes and procedures. Electroless Nickel Plating however, is proving to be extremely useful and beneficial for all of the right reasons. It uses an auto-catalytic chemical reaction that deposits a Nickel coating onto a whole range of substrates. Electroless Nickel plating components are generally considered much harder wearing, they’re more chemically resistant, and they’re more corrosively resistant as well. 

How Does Electroless Nickel Plating Work?

Electroless nickel plating uses a specially constructed solution; is a nickel phosphorus alloy. The overall plating solution can actually be specially tailored in order to suit particular applications. The main benefit behind high phosphorus electroless nickel is the fact that it provides a barrier that is pore free, and subsequently helps to provide a protective layer to the substrate underneath, protecting it from attack and oxidation, providing a very strong chemical and corrosion resistance in the process. Electroless plating provides a considerable amount of advantages over standard electroplating, including the fact that it: 

•    Provides unlimited throwing power 
•    Provides reduced hydrogen charging 
•    Provides the ability to fully coat surfaces that would just not be possible via electroplating 
•    Virtually no excess deposit at high points 

What Are the Primary Benefits of Electroless Nickel Plating?

Some of the primary benefits of electroless nickel plating include: 

Reliable and versatile: As mentioned, one of the primary benefits associated with electroless nickel plating is the fact that the finished products are extremely reliable and versatile. For example, standard electroplating often causes excess build-ups that may then need the substrates to undergo post process grinding. This process is expensive and it takes time. With electroless nickel plating however, these issues are avoided. 

Increased thickness: Another benefit is the fact that the process itself provides an even better thickness, meaning that higher tolerances can be achieved, and more protection will be achieved as a result. This not only makes substrates stronger, it also provides additional protection against rust and corrosion.
