Is Electroplating What You Need?

One of the most modern forms of metal finishing is that of electroplating.  It is most often used in common industries, such as automotive, aerospace, medical, army and electrical.  The Copper electroplatingelectroplating process occurs when a metal component which contains metal ions enables the bonding of a metal substrate via electrodeposition.  The metal component in suspended in the said solution, where a direct power supply provides the metal component with a direct current flow whilst submerged in the chemical bath.  The process involving the current provokes a reaction from the ions which are contained within the solution causing them to attract themselves to the metallic part of the metal components surface.  This results in an even, smooth metal coating which thoroughly and well coats the base metal.

The Benefits of Electroplating

The main reason that the electroplating process is undertaken is so that the performance of the metal component is enhanced and its life is lengthened.  These characteristics, along with certain others, can add to specific component parts, so that needs for the manufacturers can be adjusted to.  These include adding certain characteristics to a chosen part, like:

  • Lower friction through greater lubrication
  • Better wear, abrasion and corrosion resistance
  • Temperature and impact resistance
  • Improved conductivity
  • Improved solderability
  • Porosity reducing
  • Creating added strength and hardness to the component
  • Creating a thicker appearance to smaller or undersized components
  • Increased protection for EMI and RFI shielding

General Plating

Base metals are matched with that of the surface coating metal finishes, which come in such large variation.  The most common in this field are copper, brass, nickel, steel and bronze.  It can be difficult making the decision as to which surface metal to use for the finish, but it is generally the components uses which decipher as to which surface metal will coat the component correctly.  The will in order you to gain the highest performance and longest lasting component part for electroplating.

As examples:

Gold plating is the perfect solution for electrical conductivity, heat protection and corrosion and can survive in a multitude of environments and temperatures.

Silver plating is commonly used in the electrical industry dues to its low electrical resistance.

Nickel plating is ideal for the chemical industry.  It protects against chemicals and is corrosion and wear resistant.

Copper plating is most commonly used in the automotive industry.
