The Great Tinplate

tin plating Nitec UKCassiterite is the mineral which creates the common metal we all know as tin.  The country that produce the biggest quantity of tin is China but they are closely followed by that of Indonesia and Peru.  Tin is common in our society and used widely in our day to day lives thanks to its multifunctional characteristics.   When it comes in to contact with air it does not easily oxidise, it is malleable and ductile, too.  Therefore, these qualities help it to be the great for soldering and tin plating, which are the most common of its uses.

Creating Tin Plating

There are many different types of plating, tin plating being one of them.  This is a process where one metal is coat by another, usually hardier, less expensive metal.  The other metal is often something like iron or steel which is then coated with tin, as the tin is able to protect the iron or steel due to it being corrosion resistant and abstaining from rust.  Tinplate is most commonly used for roofing and in many cases walling.  When the term ‘terneplate’ is referred to in relation to tinplate, this refers to the coating of iron or steel with tin with the addition of lead for added protection.

Where did Tin Plating come from?

It was in the early 1800s that tin plating originated and this was when tin cans were being used in huge quantities in order to preserve many different types of foods.  Tin cans were seen as the most appropriate method of preservation as they were hardy and did not erode or corrode when they were left for long periods of time.  They could also withstand the elements.  Today, tinplate accounts for approximately 17% of tin consumption.

Tin Plating has its Advantages

  • Transformable without any cracking
  • Enhances the performance and durability of the component
  • Extremely resistant to any corrosion
  • Extremely resistant to any tarnishing
  • Good conductor of electricity
  • Usable across a number of industries
  • Not easily oxidized in air
  • Typically non-toxic
